Fresh flowers still popular with mothers

TRURO — In the few days leading up to the second Sunday in May florists are kept on the move with a steady call for fresh flowers.
Robin Young, owner of Jeans Flowers and Gifts in Truro, said this is the busiest time of year for florists who spend several days filling orders for people wanting to honour and thank their mothers with flowers.
“There is not one single flower that is most popular but there are lots of mixed spring flowers and flowering plants,” said Young.
She said one of the highest requested items are arrangements in a vase or a dish.
In the early 1900s when Mother’s Day was first celebrated carnations played a major part in the special occasion. It was once customary to see women wearing a red carnation to honour a living mother and white carnations signified a mother had passed away.
Young said that trend has taken a downward turn during the past 15 years but the traditional flower is still very much a part of the special occasion.
“It’s certainly a staple in the floral industry but now it’s used with a number of other things,” she said.
