Unicycle racers invade Truro for unique event
More than 100 riders expected for Lobster loop
COLIN MACLEAN The Truro Daily News
TRURO — Anyone travelling in downtown Truro on June 18 will be greeted by the sight of dozens of unicycles racing.
And it should be quite the show, said Margot Bégin-Gillis of the Colchester Regional Development Agency, one of several local sponsors for the event.
While support is strong, she said, sponsors initially weren’t quite sure what to think when the concept was introduced.
“Unicycle racing wasn’t necessarily something we even knew existed,” Bégin-Gillis said.
More than 100 riders from all over the world are to participate in the event, known as Ride the Lobster.
“Some of the people who are coming are world-class athletes,” Bégin-Gillis said.
The Truro race, starting at 7 p.m., is dubbed The Downtown Lobster Loop and is a side event to the larger 800-kilometre race across Nova Scotia.
The loop will take cyclists down Queen Street to Waddell Street, then up Prince Street and across Church Street and back onto Queen. It’s a timed race with riders keeping a steady pace until the final two laps when they make a break for the finish.
The larger Ride the Lobster race continues the following morning with racers leaving from the sportsplex in Brookfield.
Cycling enthusiasts feel the Truro section will be the premier event of the series, said Bégin-Gillis.
It’s also a great opportunity for Nova Scotia to attract a different kind of tourist, she said, since activities like this appeal to a younger crowd.
“Like a lot of people, I guess I thought it was kind of obscure. But now I think it’s a really neat opportunity for Nova Scotia,” she said.
