TRURO — Seeing a recovering addict seek continued help is one of the joys of Responsible Gaming Awareness Week, says a
representative with the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation.
The corporation is celebrating the special week with a number of events throughout the province. Locally, an information display was at the Truro Mall Tuesday that included an online quiz and information on gambling responsibly, budgeting, card games, video lottery terminals and slot machines.
“We want to help empower Nova Scotians make informed playing decisions,” said Jamie Strow, project assistant with the gaming corporation.
“I saw one man who was addicted and had gone through programs and still wanted to learn more information from us. It’s an awesome feeling knowing we are making a difference.”
The displays going around the province include information on how to ensure people are gambling responsibly, including tips on setting times and budgets when gambling, and sticking to them.
“I think this information resonates with people. They remember it,” Strow said, adding 93 per cent of gamblers do so responsibly.
Brookfield’s Sandra Gibson dropped by the display. She works at a local garage that sells lottery tickets and said she has seen the effects of problem gambling.
“If you wrote down what you spend and won you’d be surprised,” Gibson said. “It’s important to educate people how easy it can be to become a problem gambler.”
“Gambling is a form of entertainment and we want to help players keep it that way,” said Marie Mullally, president and CEO of the gaming corporation, upon the release of a new website.
The site, www.nsgc.ca, is designed to provide information to help players make informed decisions and help prevent problems before they start. It features tips on setting time limits, budgeting and knowing the odds.
