TRURO, N.S.

Hearing she was chosen as Athletics Nova Scotia’s Bantam Athlete of the Year was pretty exciting for 12-year-old Willa Evans.

Award winners were announced Nov. 18 and Willa was recognized for her skills in track and field.

“It was kind of surprising,” she said. “I started track and field last May. I was like, ‘Maybe I should do this for my school.’ I tried out and did well, I guess.”

She became a member of the Truro Lions Track & Field Club, which nominated her for the award.

“I started training with the Lions this summer and they’ve helped me a lot,” she said. “John Nolan (sprints and relays coach) helped a lot. I’m a short distance runner.”

She said her favourite part of track and field is training and hanging out with friends. She also plays hockey and soccer.

The Athletics Nova Scotia awards will be presented at provincials in January.
